Creating Menu, Pages, Posts, Categories etc for WordPress Website

Creating Menu, Pages, Posts, Category, Tags

BEFORE YOU START BUILDING YOUR WEBSITE YOU SHOULD DO THESE

1- Go to a website.
For Example go to www.Lawyerstech.com or www.WritingLaw.com or any other website.

Inspect the website.
See what all the website has.

Here in this example I will use www.LawyersTech.com
Visit www.LawyersTech.com.
You will see that there is a bar below the website’s name. It has options like “BUILD YOUR WEBSITE, BEST, HOW TO, NEWS HEADLINES”
These are either pages, categories, tags or posts. (which has been made into a menu.)

What all options you want on your website?
WRITE IT DOWN ON THE NOTEBOOK.

Most people have personal or appropriate options.
Go to www.writinglaw.com
It has “Law Subjects, How to be a Successful Lawyer, Buy Law Books” etc because these are appropriate for their law website.

For news websites following options would be suitable-
Breaking News
Headlines
India
Global
Tech News
Entertainment
Bollywood
Travel

Personal or business websites (in addition to appropriate options) may have following options-
*About Us
*Contact Us
Our History
Address
Qualifications
Branches
Specification
Social Profile Links
Updates
*Almost all have. Sort of ubiquitous and mandatory.

Decide what your website is about. Think of options according to that.
Tip- You are just beginning. Do not burden yourself and your website by putting tens of options. Currently limit it to maximum 5. Write it on the Notebook.

In this post now I will tell you how to create pages, post, categories, tags and menu (which is made up of or is a combination of Pages, Posts, Categories, Tags). Continue Reading to understand.

Creating Pages

Creating pages and creating posts is similar.
In WordPress Dashboard
Hover mouse on Pages – Click Add New
Enter Page Title(for example About Us)
Write what you want to in the big box below
(Customize it using tools like Bold, Italic, Underline, Colours, Links etc. (If you do not see colour option or two columns of tools click on right most icon (Toolbar Toggle) and you will get additional tools like colour palette.)
(Add picture(s) using “Add Media” or “Set featured image”) (You can click on the picture and use tools to centre you picture or edit it) (Always fill in details like Title and Alt Text for every picture. Make this a habit.)

When you click publish the page is published. However unlike posts, pages do not show up automatically on your website after publishing. You will have to assign a place on your website’s header or sidebar or footer for that page to be visible on your website. (we will do it when creating menu)
WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS YOU WROTE ON THE NOTEBOOK? If it is something like ‘About Us, Contact Us, Our Goal, Motto, Address, Branches, and other such options which are static in nature, that is which won’t change much; then make pages for those options.
For Example- Make a page titled ‘About Us’. Make another page titled ‘Our Goal’ etc.
(We will use these Pages to create a menu which will show on the website)
See examples- www.WritingLaw.com/about , www.LawyersTech.com/about

(BEFORE YOU READ BELOW UNDERSTAND THAT IF YOUR WEBSITE IS NOT SUCH WHERE YOU WRITE POSTS, THEN MOST LIKELY YOU WON’T NEED CATEGORIES, TAGS AND POSTS)

Creating Posts

In WordPress Dashboard
Hover mouse on Posts – Click Add New
Enter Post Title
Write what you want to in the big box below.
(Customize it if you want)
You can add your posts to Categories, Tags etc and organise it. (These are good practices.)
Click Publish.

Open your website in new tab (or take your mouse pointer to top left corner. There you will see your website’s name. Right click and open it in new tab.)
You will see that your Post is visible on your homepage.

Congratulations!

Creating Categories

As the name says categories are used to put posts in categories and help your visitors when they navigate on your website. It also makes your posts relevant and properly organised.

In WordPress Dashboard
Hover mouse on Posts – Click on Categories
Fill in your category name.
(On www.Lawyerstech.com ‘Build Your Website, News, How To etc’ are Categories)
Slug is the name shown in address bar.
(Slug for ‘Build Your Website’ on Lawyer’s Tech is https://www.lawyerstech.com/category/how-to-build-a-website-without-coding/ )
Keep slugs as relevant as possible.

Creating Tags

Tags are useful and help categorise your posts even more. They help your website visitors.
(for example Go to https://www.writinglaw.com/maternity-benefit-act-1961/ . Here below the post heading you will see ‘Tagged’. It has two tags namely ‘Bare Act’ and ’Safety of Women and Children’. If a user want to read all posts on Safety of Women and Children he can click there and read all posts related to Safety of Women and Children.)

You can create tags the same way.
In WordPress Dashboard
Hover mouse on Posts – Click Tags
You can create tags.
(You can also create tags while writing posts from that same window.)

Creating Menu

99% of the themes have the option to show Menu in at least one location.
(In our theme on Lawyer’s Tech the main menu location is below website title.)
(Bar showing ‘Build Your Website, How To, News Headlines’ etc is a menu)

You can create many menus with different categories and pages and posts etc and show it in header, sidebar, footer according to your needs.
If you have a news/blog covering lots of topics then you will need to create multiple menus to make your website better.
Else one to three menus are enough. (Most needing just one menu)

STEPS TO CREATE MENU

In WordPress Dashboard
Hover mouse on Appearance – Click Menus
Click “Create New Menu”
(I hope you already have created relevant Pages and Categories that you want on your website.)

Now give your menu a name. This name is not visible to anyone except you(admin).
Like I have named my main menu ’Top Main Menu’

Next,
Focus your attention on the left side. You will see ‘Pages’, ‘Posts’, ‘Custom Links’, ‘Categories’, ‘Format’.
You already have Pages that you made (like About Us or whatever you have created)
Under Pages Click ‘View All’ and add the pages you want to the menu.

Similarly you can add Categories or Posts.
(At ‘Lawyer’s Tech we have added Categories like ‘How To’ to main Menu.)

After adding Pages, Categories etc, focus on the right side that is “Menu Structure”
Here you can move the options up or down.

Once satisfied, see below that.
Let Auto Add Pages unchecked.
In ‘Display Locations’ Check/Select ‘Main Menu’

Click “SAVE MENU”

Open your website in new tab. You will see your menu(most probably under your website name / whatever is the menu location of your theme.)

Congratulations!

Similarly you can create multiple menus and put them in footer or sidebar etc by going to Appearance – Customize – WIDGETS and add the menus you created in PRIMARY SIDEBAR, FOOTER OF YOUR WEBSITE etc.

Whatever I have told you here are very simple. But to get maximum satisfaction you will have to build menus, put them at different locations, see what works for you and your website. Learning how to create posts or menu is easy. In fact there is nothing to learn. You just have to follow what is said on the screen. 80% of the things are self explanatory. What takes time is PERFECTING IT!
(And no one can teach you how to perfect it because your website’s perfection depends on your likes, your website’s nature and your thoughts.)

Now you may spend as much time as you want in theme customization and make your website perfect.
