REDIRECTION IN WORDPRESS AND ITS USAGES
Believe it or not but there are many such urls in your website which if visited will take the visitor to ‘PAGE NOT FOUND’ page. (This especially happens if your have a blog / old website / you make frequent changes like moving posts, changing slugs etc.)
Maybe earlier there existed a page or post which now has been moved. So if a visitor visits that page it will say ‘Page not found’.
Maybe some other website has linked your post which has now been moved or deleted.
Maybe your social media profiles have links that have been moved or deleted.
Maybe slug for one of your post or category was www.yourdomain.com/123 but now you changed it to www.yourdomain.com/1234
So if anyone visits the old link then it will say ‘PAGE NOT FOUND’
Using ‘redirect’ you can redirect / take them to the new page or to your homepage.
For Example- Go to your website’s homepage i.e www.yourdomain.com
Now add /123 at the end of it. www.yourdomain.com/123
Let us imagine this was your old post. Now if you hit enter it will say something like ‘Page Not Found’ or ‘Opps Page does not exist’
We will solve this issue.
USING PLUGIN FOR REDIRECTION
1- Install and activate plugin named ‘Redirection’
3- Go to ‘REDIRECTS’ (Just below OPTIONS)
5- Click ‘ADD REDIRECT’
Now visit www.yourdomain.com/123
You will see that it does not takes you to ‘Page Not Found’ page but it takes you to your homepage (Target URL)
Similarly you can do these for any URL your have moved or such.
For Example- If you have moved or changed slug for a post then you can use the old URL and new URL to create ‘redirect’.
Anyone visiting old URL will automatically be navigated / redirected / taken to new URL.
